11. Zakiella

Zakiella was born out of the founder’s search for a high-performing lipstick that was fully natural and organic and didn’t use aluminum-containing pigments. The lipsticks she found at the time either performed poorly or contained ingredients she wanted to avoid. This sparked her desire to learn cosmetic formulation and develop her own formulas that give impressive color payoff and are comfortable to wear all day. Throughout this process, she also learned of the prevalence of microplastic ingredients in the cosmetics industry, even within clean beauty products. Determined to make a positive change, Zahra and her mother, Barbara, collaborated to develop Zakiella, a brand that reimagines clean beauty with proprietary formulas free from microplastic ingredients, offering eco-conscious cosmetics that celebrate nature and self-expression.
Developing Zakiella’s formulas was a meticulous labor of love, with many trials along the way. Creating makeup that lasts well, applies smoothly, and gives a strong color payoff without using any microplastic ingredients wasn’t easy! Using synthetic film formers makes it so much easier, but at the cost of the environment. Each aspect of developing the products was carefully considered, such as using organic beeswax from the United States (more local) instead of China (easier to find), composting most materials used to make them, and printing labels directly on the product itself instead of using individual cardboard boxes.

I was 50 years old when I first noticed the changes associated with ageing on my face. Of course, fine lines had appeared earlier, but those did not cause me any worries. It was not until two dramatically deep wrinkles appeared in each corner of my mouth, that my attention was fully captured. As a full-time Professor at the University of Iceland, I was running a large research group of many postdocs and PhD students working on ocean dynamics and reproduction and development of commercially important marine species. I was not, in any way, looking for new endeavors, but was, however, already experiencing difficulties finding good hydration for my skin.. Sadly, I discovered that my skin did not tolerate any of the products already on the market. As someone born with a deep curiosity, I became a passionate reader on skincare ingredients and after delving into the back-of-pack information, I was absolutely shocked to discover the unbelievable practices happening in the skincare industry. It’s deeply concerning to learn that some products on the market actually contain toxins like formalin and benzene derivatives. One thing lead to another and I decided to take matters into my own hands and create a simple, pure formula right in my kitchen, a formula that would safeguard my skin in the harsh environment of the North Atlantic. Little did I know, but this was the beginning of TARAMAR Beauty and my 180° switch from being a professor of fisheries sciences to a beauty entrepreneur.
While most skincare is derived from the Pharmaceutical industry, TARAMAR is based on research in Food Sciences and Marine Biology. In a clear mission to create absolutely pure chemical free skincare, we the founders developed a new Technology (NoTox) to formulate and store skincare formula without using any conventional preservatives or other compromising chemicals. This technology is now patented and has enabled us to create some of the purest formula on the market. Out second breakthrough has to do with a unique process where we assemble natural skin-actives based on their natural frequencies presented in our Arctic Complex. This way our formula are 100% synergistic, and present a symphony of natural vibrations. Our NoTox technology is perhaps the only technology available that can conserve these vibration in a finished product over at least 12-18 month storage. Our third milestone was the development of effective and natural delivery systems. These are based on more than 35 years of research and more than 80 peer reviewed scientific papers. This way the efficacy of our natural skin actives are guarantied and the beneficial changes can be seen with naked eyes. Our fourth milestone was the incorporation of ingenious ingredients from the Icelandic nature. These included the lava filtered water, glacial minerals, organic seaweed, herbs and vegetables. After intensive research we have shown that these ingredients have the ability to stop oxidation, inflammation and breakdown of collagen, elastin and tyrosine fibers; to name a few.
